Union Pacific Seeks Public Comment for CALEA Accreditation of Response Management Communications Center

Omaha, Nebraska, July 15, 2016

Union Pacific seeks the public's input about the company's Response Management Communications Center (RMCC) as part of a required assessment to maintain the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) accreditation.

RMCC is Union Pacific's 24-hour, seven-day-a-week communications center that centralizes the company's responses to critical incidents. CALEA is the credentialing authority for public safety agencies including law enforcement and communications centers.

The general public and Union Pacific employees are invited to provide feedback about RMCC by calling (877) 859-9008, Tuesday, July 26, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. CST. Comments will be processed by the CALEA assessment team. Calls are limited to 10 minutes and must address RMCC's abilities to comply with CALEA standards. Access to the standards is available through Union Pacific Railroad's Police Headquarters, 1400 Douglas St, Omaha, NE 68179. Written comments can also be sent to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Va. 22030-2215 or www.calea.org.

"Union Pacific was one of very few private communications centers to receive CALEA accreditation in 2013 and we voluntarily seek to maintain this highly-regarded approval of excellence for safety agencies," said RMCC Director Brian Jarrett. "Maintaining accreditation underscores RMCC continually meets the highest level of internationally recognized standards for public safety communications."

CALEA accreditation requires RMCC to comply with advanced standards in four areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services. The process phases are enrollment, self-assessment, on-site assessment, commission review and decision and maintaining compliance.

CALEA was established in 1979 as a result of combined efforts of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement (NOBLE), National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) and the Police Executive Research Fund (PERF) to establish a law enforcement credentialing authority. According to CALEA, today, only 17 percent of U.S. law enforcement agencies have earned CALEA accreditation.
